Preoccupazione della Santa Sede per la crisi in
Jugoslavia
Durante la riunione del Consiglio Permanente dell'OSCE, tenutasi il
29 aprile 1999, il Rappresentante Permanente della Santa Sede, Mons. Mario
Zenari, ha pronunciato il seguente intervento:
Since February of 1998, when the crisis in the Federal Republic of
Yugoslavia gained international attention, the Holy See, like others, has
constantly offered its services in order that a just and equitable
solution would be found so that the human suffering caused by it would be
alleviated.
In this past month, faced with the evolution of the crisis, Pope John
Paul II has unceasingly let his voice be heard. He has asked, in diverse
fora, that the peoples of Yugoslavia be allowed to live in harmony in
their lands, that the refugees be permitted to return to their homes and
that the arms be silenced. The Holy See has also expressed the hope that
an international peace-keeping force be present on the ground in order to
assist the populations to live peacefully together.
The Holy See is convinced that the only way to solve the present
conflict, is through dialogue, based on respect for law and history.
Therefore, it applauds those initiatives undertaken by international
organizations and single countries precisely for that end. It is
particularly hopeful that the mission currently led by the Secretary
General of the United Nations will bear fruit.
In the meantime, the Holy See urgently appeals to all Nations and
international charitable organizations to respond generously to the
humanitarian needs of so many people who are the victims of the present
situation in Yugoslavia.
