Frankfurt Book Fair 2008
More than one hundred international publishing houses have asked to meet with Libreria
Editrice Vaticana (LEV) at the Frankfurt Book Fair (15-19 October 2008):
they range from American publishers such as Doubleday, Ignatius, Our
Sunday Visitor, and Orbis, to German publishers such as Herder, Johannes
Verlag, and St. Benno Verlag. There will also be meetings with
publishers from France, Eastern Europe, and Latin America.
This year the same stand (Hall 5.1 B 943) will also present a wide range of
Vatican Museum titles, among which will be the world-first appearances
of two publications on the Vatican Art Gallery, a new series La
parola dipinta, introduced by the first of three volumes on the
Sistine Chapel entitled Michelangelo e la volta, as well as a
preview of the forthcoming Arabic edition of the volume Musei
Vaticani.
We foresee further growth in interest in the writings and speeches of
Pope Benedict XVI. We will also be proposing to publishers recent titles
such as such as Il coraggio di prendere il largo by Cardinal
Rodríguez Maradiaga; Vi racconto la mia vita by John Paul II,
edited by Saverio Gaeta; Pio XII: La verità ti farà libero by
Margherita Marchione; and an illustrated edition of Paolo e i primi
discepoli di Cristo by Benedict XVI. Our liturgical publications
will certainly also receive attention.
During the Fair three important events are worth noting. The
first will be on 16th October when LEV, in
collaboration with the Pontifical Committee for Historical Sciences,
will present to German publishers, the complete series of Atti e
documenti dedicated to the historiography of the Church, with
the patronage of the Cardinal Secretary of State, H.E. Cardinal Tarcisio
Bertone, in the presence of H.E. Cardinal Raffaele Farina, Archivist and
Librarian of the Holy Roman Church.
On the same day LEV representatives will participate with Herder
in presenting the first volume of the Opera omnia of Joseph
Ratzinger in German. On the same occasion, the Director of LEV, Don
Giuseppe Costa, will announce the program for the Italian edition.
Also of importance is the visit of H.E. Cardinal Giovanni Lajolo,
President of the Pontifical Commission and of the Governorate of the
Vatican City State, who will visit the stand on 17th
October and present the publications of the Vatican Museums.

- “Jesus of Nazareth” published by Doubleday
(31/01/07) - On 29th January the Italian newspaper Il Giornale
published an article about the forthcoming publication, in the United States of
America, of the first work by Benedict XVI. Libreria Editrice Vaticana would like to complete the information given in the
article indicating the following:
- The Libreria Editrice Vaticana has signed an agreement with the Publishing
House Rizzoli for the world rights and diffusion of this first volume by Benedict XVI;
- The Publishing House Rizzoli autonomously came to an agreement, as Mondadori
did in the past for the books by John Paul II, with the most important world Publishing
Houses;
- In this case, for the United States of America, the Publishing House Rizzoli
made the agreement with Doubleday;
- In Doubleday’s catalogue there are already two titles written by the Popes
namely: “Journal of a soul” (Il Giornale dell’anima) by the Blessed John XXIII,
“Gift and Mystery” (Dono e mistero) by John Paul II besides “The Catechism of the
Catholic Church” (Il Catechismo della Chiesa cattolica). On account of this respectful editorial
curriculum, Doubleday deeply desired to publish also the first book by Benedict XVI;
- Finally, it is important to note that Doubleday has always published the most
important documents of the American Bishops’ Conference before the establishment by
the latter of its own Publishing House.
- Second Meeting with the International Publishing Houses who published works by

would like to give a part of the sum coming from His works’copyright to the
Study Centre which the Ratzinger Schũlerkreis intends to establish under his
name. The Centre will give particular attention to the study and research of the
theological thought of Professor/Cardinal Ratzinger and its development in time.
Besides these, Cardinal Bertone said that the Pope would like that funds for
scholarships in fundamental theology and patristic and biblical studies be also
provided.
The following points were taken up during the meeting: - Excursus/Retrieval of the theological works of the Professor/Cardinal

- Press release of Libreria Editrice
Vaticana
(21/11/06) - Libreria Editrice Vaticana heartily
thanks Pope Benedict XVI for the high esteem and confidence that His
Holiness has shown in giving to the Vatican Publishing House the text of
His first volume "Jesus of Na zareth. From His Baptism to His
Transfiguration". At the same time LEV , conscious of the great
international expectation for the first work by Benedict XVI , has already
stipulated an agreement with the Publishing House Rizzoli and has conceded
to the above-mentioned Publishing House the rights of publication,
translation, diffusion and marketing of the work throughout the world.
The choice made by the Libreria Editrice Vaticana as regards the
Publishing House Rizzoli is, besides being a proof of continuity with the
editorial choices made in the past for the diffusion of the titles of the
Popes, also a tangible sign of gratitude in view of which the Publishing
House Rizzoli did, in the previous years, in making known the works of the
beloved Servant of God, John Paul II. This refers particularly to the
large diffusion of the title "Memoria e identità"(Memory and identity).
On the other hand, the Publishing House Rizzoli has ceded the German
rights to the Publishing House Herder, taking into consideration the bonds
of esteem and friendship that existed between this Publishing House and
the then Professor and the then Cardinal Ratzinger for over the last fifty
years.
